Health Insurance Requirement for Czech Student Visa

Czech law requires all non-EU students to hold comprehensive health insurance with a minimum of 400,000 EUR coverage. Here is exactly what you need.

The legal requirement

Under § 180i of Act No. 326/1999 Coll. (the Czech Foreigners Act), all non-EU nationals applying for a long-term visa or residence permit must hold comprehensive health insurance. For students, this means: minimum coverage of 400,000 EUR per insured event; no deductible or excess; coverage for the full duration of the permit (not just emergencies); issued by a Czech-licensed insurer regulated by the Czech National Bank (ČNB).

What does NOT qualify

The following types of insurance are commonly rejected by Czech embassies and the Foreign Police: travel insurance (even comprehensive); short-term insurance; employer-provided foreign coverage; EU student health card (EHIC); any policy not issued by a ČNB-licensed insurer.

How to buy qualifying insurance

mypojisteni.cz compares all Czech-licensed policies that meet the 400,000 EUR visa requirement. You can buy online in minutes, receive your policy by email, and use it immediately in your visa application. Policies from SV pojišťovna, Colonnade Insurance, and AXA Assistance are all accepted by Czech embassies worldwide.

How much does it cost?

Student plans start from CZK 5,640/year (CZK 470/month, approximately €20/month). Comprehensive plans with broader outpatient cover start from CZK 6,600/year. The cost of insurance is a fraction of your total study costs — do not risk visa rejection by choosing the wrong product.

🎓 Planning to study in the Czech Republic?

Every international student in the Czech Republic is required to have health insurance for the duration of their stay. But not all insurance is the same, and many students do not realise there is an important difference.

What is commercial health insurance?

  • Unlike public health insurance (which is only available to EU citizens or those employed in Czechia), commercial health insurance is specifically designed for non-EU international students.
  • Emergency medical care and hospitalisation
  • Doctor visits and outpatient treatment
  • Prescription medications
  • Repatriation in serious cases

Why do you actually need it?

  • It is a mandatory requirement for a long-term student visa in the Czech Republic
  • Healthcare in Czechia is not free for international students without valid coverage
  • One unplanned hospital visit can cost thousands of euros out of pocket
  • Without it, your visa application may be rejected or revoked

Getting the right insurance before you arrive is not just a formality — it is peace of mind throughout your studies.

Key tips

Buy before your visa interview — you need the policy document as part of your application.

Set the start date to your arrival date — not your purchase date.

Buy for at least 12 months — matching your initial visa/permit period.

Keep the policy document in your phone — Czech Foreign Police may ask at any time.
