Family Reunification Visa Czech Republic
Bringing your spouse, children or parents to Czech Republic? This guide covers the family reunification visa (Type D), required documents, health insurance, and financial proof.
Who can apply for family reunification?
Non-EU nationals who have a family member legally residing in Czech Republic on a long-term visa, residence permit, or Czech citizenship may apply for a family reunification visa (Type D). Eligible family members include spouses or registered partners, dependent children under 18, and in some cases dependent parents. The applicant must apply at a Czech embassy or consulate in their country of residence.
Required documents
The following documents are required for a Czech family reunification visa application:
- Valid passport (minimum 6 months validity beyond your intended stay)
- Completed visa application form
- Two passport-sized photos
- Proof of relationship — marriage certificate, birth certificate (apostilled and translated into Czech)
- Proof that your sponsor holds a valid Czech long-term visa or residence permit
- Proof of shared accommodation — rental contract or property ownership certificate at a Czech address
- Proof of financial means — showing the sponsor can support the applicant (see below)
- Comprehensive health insurance — minimum 400,000 EUR coverage (see below)
- Criminal record certificate with apostille from your home country (for applicants over 15)
Health insurance requirement
All family reunification visa applicants must hold comprehensive health insurance covering at least 400,000 EUR per insured event, with no deductible, valid from the first day of intended stay. This is the same requirement as for student and work visas. Standard Schengen travel insurance (30,000 EUR minimum) is not sufficient. The policy must be from a Czech-licensed insurer accepted by the Cizinecká policie. mypojisteni.cz compares plans from SV pojišťovna, Colonnade Insurance, and AXA Assistance — all accepted by Czech authorities. The policy document can be emailed immediately and used for your visa application.
Financial proof for family reunification
The Czech sponsor (the family member already living in Czech Republic) must demonstrate sufficient income to support themselves and the applicant(s). The minimum financial means required are approximately 2× the subsistence minimum (životní minimum) per person in the household. As of 2026, this is roughly CZK 5,000/month for the first person plus CZK 2,200/month per additional family member. The Ministry of Interior may require bank statements for the preceding 3–6 months, employment contract, and confirmation of current income.
Processing time and where to apply
Applications are submitted at the Czech embassy or consulate in the applicant's home country. Processing typically takes 60–90 days from the date of submission, though it can take up to 120 days. Apply well in advance of your intended arrival date. Once issued, the visa allows entry to Czech Republic, after which you must register with the Foreign Police (Cizinecká policie) within 3 working days and apply for a residence permit card.
Key tips
Apostille all foreign documents (marriage certificate, birth certificate, criminal record) before applying — this is the most common cause of delays.
Buy health insurance before your embassy appointment — you need the policy document as part of your application. Policies can start on a future date.
Children under 15 do not need a criminal record certificate; children between 15 and 18 do.
The financial means requirement applies to the sponsor's income — make sure their payslips and bank statements are in order before applying.
